OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) is a networking suite created by International Standards Organization in the 1980s as a European subject. The OSI model comprises 7 layers through which the communication process is divided and defined into multiple tasks of information movement through the networked computer.

Below is a description of the layers that make up the OSI model in detail: the physical layer5 contains a description of the property objectives regarding the communications media which is rather diverse, the electrical properties and an analysis of the exchanged signals; The Data Link is the second layer and is used for an illustration of the logical organization in regard to how the data bits are transmitted on specific medium. It is applied in the definition of framing, check summing, and addressing the Ethernet package; The Net layer is basically used for a description of the process used by the exchange series to enable data delivery between the two nodes in the network.

The OSI model is inclusive of a transport layer used for describing the quality and nature of the delivered data. This layer is used for a definition of the means with which the retransmissions can be used to guarantee that the data delivery is efficient; the session layer is responsible for a description of the data organization sequence whenever they are much larger in comparison to the typical packets handled by the lower layers. This layer is capable of pairing request and reply packets into isolated procedure calls. The data syntax transfer is typically described by the presentation layer.

The Application layer is used for describing how work actually gets done and it is capable of implementing the operations of the filer system. It provides the services of the end users such as electronic messaging file transfers, email, access of the virtual terminal and the network management. The user basically interacts with this layer. It can thus be termed as the Graphic User Interface or GUI because the services it provides are related to the network communication to ensure that they run through a network.

The supply of network services to the end-user by the application layer is basically a protocol that works with the data of the user. An ideal example is a web browser application where the HTTP protocol of the layer can package the data required, receive and send the contents of the web page. The application layer obtains and provides data from and to the presentation layer respectively.
