Why Should I Buy a Netbook?

By Greg Black

Netbooks are a relatively recent development in the laptop arena, directly targeted at consumers who are interested in mobility and affordability. There are some definite pros and cons associated with netbooks, however, and understanding all the features (or lack of features) before you choose to purchase a netbook can help you decide if these computers are really right for you.

Netbooks are, most notably, small. This is both a good and a bad thing. Obviously, netbooks are meant for users who are constantly on the go and dont wish to lug around a larger, more clunky laptop. Netbooks are usually between 9 or 10 across and can easily fit in backpacks, purses, or other bags without adding serious weight. They can be used in any cramped area without adding to the problem. On the other hand, a keyboard that is a mere 9 across can be really difficult to adapt to. While typing up a blog post probably wont be much trouble for the average user, most people likely wont enjoy working on extended projects with it.

Netbooks are designed specifically for wireless communications and access to the Internet. Most productivity takes place on web-based applications or through programs that have been downloaded onto the computer since most netbooks do not include an optical disc drive. This is good because it further decreases weight and costs, but it can be inconvenient if you need an application that cannot be purchased online or accessed over the Internet. Some software will be preloaded, but these computers were never meant for serious coding, gaming, and processing.

If, however, you are looking for a computer that can help you stay connected, or if you start to get a little antsy when you dont have immediate access to your favorite social media sites, a netbook might be just what you're looking for. Are you blogging on the go? Are you a busy student running from class to class? Are you trying to find a convenient way to do some work while youre commuting? If any of these are the case, its hard to beat the mobility and convenience of a netbook.

Finally, when it comes to netbooks, one of the most obvious pros is the cost. These were designed from the start to be a very affordable option, and are often half the price of an average laptop. This may seem to be a pro without a con, and to some extent that is correct. But you must remember that in computing you usually get what you pay for. Netbooks are cheap because of a definitely lack of features. If, however, you don't need a gaming, processing, or coding monster of a computer, then an affordable netbook may be just what you need.
