Raving About the Roving Cricut Gypsy

By Mark Cartis

Provo Craft are soon to release their latest item in the Cricut line, the Cricut Gypsy. It has the world of crafters and scrapbookers buzzing, particularly since there have been some clever advertising including a YouTube video. So why are people talking about the Gypsy and what exactly is it?

The Cricut Gypsy is a portable device that allows owners to design while on the move. Though two of the three cutting machines are portable they are not something you can sit on a train with or in a coffee shop. The Gypsy, so named because you can rove around while creating projects, is only 11 ounces in weight and 8 inches by 3 inches by 1.5 inches. It is the paper crafter's equivalent to a palmtop PDA.

Whichever Cricut cutting machine you own, the Gypsy is compatible with it, as it is with all cricut cartridges. You can store on it over 4000 cartridges, over 10,000 images and fonts that you can then design with. Just as with the pc software Design Studio, welding, flipping and so on. You do not need to have a computer to use it - you work straight on it and then when you return home you can then upload your work into the computer software. So if you end up in a place with no computer and no cricut machine, you can still get your crafting fix!

Paper crafters are quite positive about this new concept though at the time of this writing it has not been actually released for sale yet. It was meant to come out in July 2009 but a month later and we are still waiting. Those who are interested in the Cricut Gypsy should monitor the internet and in particular the Provo Craft official website. It is going to be priced at around three hundred dollars.

This is not necessarily something that all cricut fans need to have. But if you have the money, being able to relax in your favorite coffee house or on the plane on your way off to some exotic place, is a great thing for avid crafters. It is something to note though that if you have limited mobility in your hands this is not something you will find easy to use as you need to use a stylus and small side buttons.
